It's never too late to roll out a mat and begin. Whether you're brand new to yoga or stepping back after years away, this guide covers how to start and which classes fit your body best.

Why Start Yoga After 40

Yoga can support mobility, strength, and stress relief at any age or stage of life. A consistent practice may make it easier to move through your day with more ease and confidence. No matter where you're starting from, yoga meets you there.

How to Start

Starting something new can feel intimidating, but a few simple steps can set you up for success.

Start in a studio. A studio gives you instructor guidance, modifications for every level, and a set class structure so you always know what to expect. You'll also have the right space, props, and a supportive community cheering you on.

From there, go at your own pace. Let your instructor know about any injuries before class begins, and start with gentle classes to build confidence.

Which Classes to Try

Not sure where to begin? Here's a quick breakdown of classes that work well for newcomers.

Y6 Signature is for those who enjoy the heat and the familiarity of a set sequence. Move through the same intentional sequence each class, giving you the space to refine your practice, find your rhythm, and notice your progress over time. As a foundational YogaSix class, it's a great place to start and a practice you can keep coming back to.

Y6 Slow Flow is a slower-paced flow that builds balance, flexibility, and body awareness through mindful movement. Take your time moving between poses, creating space to focus on your breath, alignment, and connection to your body. Slow down, tune in, and give yourself space to fully experience your practice.

Y6 Core is a heated, Pilates-inspired practice grounded in our yoga roots. Move through intentional exercises designed to challenge your core and strengthen your entire body. Expect an energizing practice that helps you move with greater control both on and off the mat.

Y6 Restore is a grounding practice designed to release tension and create space for rest. Move through gentle stretches, supported poses, and mindful breathing to help your body and mind slow down. Finish feeling lighter, calmer, and more at ease.

Once you feel ready for more intensity, Y6 Power Flow and Y6 Sculpt are great next steps.

What to Expect in Your First Class

Wear comfortable clothes you can move in, bring water, and a towel if you'd like one. Arrive about ten to fifteen minutes early to get settled and meet your instructor. Every pose comes with options, so instructors will offer modifications to help you move at your own comfort level.

A Sample First Month

A simple plan can help you build a rhythm.

  • Week 1: Start with Y6 Slow Flow to build mobility.
  • Week 2: Add Y6 Signature to introduce heat.
  • Week 3: Add Y6 Core to build strength. Take Y6 Restore on a recovery day to let your body reset.
